Terence R. Smith received his undergraduate degree in Geography from
Cambridge
University in 1965, and a PhD in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins
University in 1971.
Terence R. Smith served on the faculties of the University of Western Ontario
and of the University of Rochester before coming to UCCB in 1976. Dr.
Smith is
currently Professor of Geography and Professor of Computer Science at
UCSB. He
served as Chair of the Department of Computer Science from 1986-90; he was
Associate Director the National Center for Geographic Information and
Analysis
for the period 1988-90; and he is currently director of the Center for
Computational Modeling and Systems and director of the Alexandria Digital
Library.
Dr. Smith's current research interests focus on the design, development and
testing of spatial and scientific databases; the design and development of
computational systems that support the modeling of complex phenomena; and
computational models of fluvial phemonena. Dr. Smith is currently PI on a
three-year award from NASA to study computational support for scientific
databases; PI on a four-year award from NSF/NASA/ARPA to develop a digital
library for spatially-indexed information; and he has been CO-PI on
nearly 40
research awards.
