Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management

UCSB's new Donald School of Environmental Science and Management will combine scientific study with instruction in policy management and will focus on the assessment of environmental problems today and in the future. Graduates will have a fundamental understanding of the complexities of climatic, hydrological, ecological and human systems at the local, regional and global level, and will be equipped to evaluate the consequences of governmental policies and regulations of industrial practice.

Recognizing that the approach to environmental problems today and in the future requires use of mathematics and statistics, computation and data management, and new measurement techniques such as remote sensing, the School will emphasize expertise and education in these techniques and applications. Core courses will include instruction in computing, simulation, and the collection and analysis of environmental data. Areas of emphasis will be: applied, quantitative ecology; environmental biogeochemistry; earth system science; and, environmental policy and resource management.

The Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management will offer three degree programs: a master's degree combining a scientific problem-oriented curriculum with policy and management; an interdisciplinary research oriented PhD program; and a mid-career associates certificate program designed to expand the problem solving skills of working professionals and to acquaint them with recent advances in research and technology. Over the next several years, the school will be recruiting the equivalent of 18 full-time. They expect to admit the first students in the Fall of 1996.
