Department of Geography

The Geography Department at UCSB focuses on the measurement, representation and modeling of geographic processes. The three areas of concentration in the department -- earth system science, human-environment relations and modeling, measurement and computation 6 -- all provide fertile areas for the exploration of the new tools and theories evolving out of the application of GIS to theoretical and practical problems. We offer several courses in GIS and related technologies as well as advanced courses in areas such as Spatial Database Modeling for Geographic Phenomena and Cartographic Programming.

The UCSB Geography Department backs up it GIS teaching commitment with extensive computer and lab facilities. There are two main computing facilities supporting the lab segments of its GIS and remote sensing programs. The Star Lab has many PCs running both LINUX and Windows NT, while the Cartography lab has a set of RS-6000 x-terminals networked to the department's Dec Alpha servers. The combination of intelectual and computational resources at UCSB make the GIS program a valuable service that is provided to both the campus and community at large.
